Woman on mobility scooter hit in crosswalk in Nanaimo

Nanaimo RCMP say an 83-year old woman was hospitalized with serious injuries after being hit by a vehicle and pinned beneath it while in a crosswalk on her mobility scooter.

The incident happened about 3 p.m. Monday on Front Street, near the Gabriola Ferry terminal.

First responders extracted the woman from under the Dodge Grand Caravan, which was driven by a 70-year-old woman who remained at the scene and co-operated with police.

Witnesses told police that the driver was making a right-hand turn to Port Place mall when the victim was struck.

Drugs and alcohol have been ruled out as factors.

The road was closed for about three hours while an RCMP collision-reconstruction analyst examined the scene.

Nanaimo RCMP Victim Services were contacted to support the people involved.
