Nanaimo RCMP say a woman who found an envelope containing $950 outside a bank didn’t hesitate to do the right thing.

She spotted the envelope near an ATM at the Royal Bank in Brooks Landing Shopping Centre about noon on a recent Saturday.

The bank was closed, so she looked around to see if there was anyone in the area before heading to the RCMP detachment to turn it in.

Finding the front door locked, she returned on Monday and gave the envelope to police.

Several days later, the bank’s branch manager called police to say a client had reported losing a large sum of money. The client then called and explained what had happened, and after she verified the amount and its denominations, the money was returned to her.

The woman who found the envelope said it was her birthday the following week and “she couldn’t ask for a better gift” than knowing the owner got the money back, said Reserve Const. Gary O’Brien.
