B.C. Ferries cancelled two roundtrip sailings between Salt Spring Island and Swartz Bay on Wednesday evening due to a Skeena Queen crew issue.

It said a specific number of crew members is needed to ensure safety in the event of an emergency and to meet Transport Canada regulations.

A spokesperson could not provide specifics about what happened to people who might been stranded by the cancellations. “While I can’t speak to a specific incident, in general anyone requiring travel assistance is encouraged to speak to a B.C. Ferries employee at the terminal, on the vessel, or by contacting our customer care team.”

B.C. Ferries pointed to an alternative route between Salt Spring’s Vesuvius Bay and Crofton on Vancouver Island, which has service until 9:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The following sailings were cancelled:

5:50 p.m. departing Fulford Harbour

7 p.m. departing Swartz Bay

7:50 pm departing Fulford Harbour
