A library card from the Greater Victoria Public Library is now providing mobile access to digital movies, TV shows, music and talking books.

The access is the result of an agreement between the library and Hoopla Digital, which also supplies other libraries in Canada and the U.S.

Thousands of titles can be electronically borrowed using a newer home computer or a mobile device such as a tablet or smartphone on the Android or iOS platform.

On computers, a plug-in will have to be downloaded; the Hoopla app is needed for mobile devices.

Library spokeswoman Alyssa Polinsky said titles are removed after the lending period expires.

“It just disappears and you don’t have to worry about late fees.”

Lending periods vary: 72 hours for video; seven days for music; 21 days for talking books. Users can borrow up to 12 Hoopla titles each month.

The library has about 232,000 members, representing about 77 per cent of Greater Victoria’s population, Polinsky said.

To sign up for Hoopla, go to gvpl.ca.

You’ll need your library password and card to create a Hoopla account.
