Victoria Day Parade long weekend events: more than a parade

Victoria Day Parade, 9 a.m. Monday along Douglas Street

Monday:

• 8:45 a.m. Douglas Mile, a fund­raising run in support of Parkinson Wellness Projects, along Douglas Street, from Summit Street to Victoria City Hall.

• 8:57 a.m. 443 Maritime Helicopter Squadron fly-past, in honour of Victoria entertainer Paul Kilshaw, who died in April at age 60.

• 9 a.m. Thrifty Foods 123rd Victoria Day Parade presented by CHEK TV starts from Finlayson Street, goes along Douglas Street to Courtney Street. The theme: “That ’70s Parade,” featuring a cavalcade of references to the disco era. Parade attendees are invited to wear 1970s fashion (think bell bottoms).

• Road closures along Douglas Street starting at 7 a.m. Monday.

• The Victoria Bike Valet free bicycle-parking service at ­Centennial Square along Pandora Avenue will be open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

• B.C. Transit will be on Sunday hours; detours during parade.

• CHEK TV will broadcast the parade live starting at 9 a.m.

(On Sunday, crowds and young musicians gathered for Festival of Bands, noon to 4:30 p.m. on the B.C. legislature grounds, featuring marching bands in Monday’s parade.)
