'Vicious' assault in Nanaimo leaves victim with life-threatening injuries

A suspect was located nearby and arrested without incident, say Nanaimo RCMP.

Nanaimo RCMP are looking for witnesses and video evidence after a “vicious” assault in the downtown area.

The incident happened about 6:20 p.m. Thursday near the intersection of Bastion and Wallace streets.

Police were at the scene within minutes and found a 38-year-old man with life-threatening injuries.

A suspect was located nearby and arrested without incident. He remains in police custody.

The victim was transported to hospital in Nanaimo by paramedics and later airlifted to Victoria for treatment.

RCMP said a weapon was used but are not disclosing what it was.

It’s not clear if the two were known to each other. Both were of no fixed address.
