A 33-year-old Courtenay woman was injured Sunday when she pinned herself between her van and the drive-through wall at a McDonald's restaurant in Courtenay.

Emergency services personnel freed the driver, who was trapped after opening her door in an attempt to retrieve money dropped while paying for her order.

RCMP said it appears the driver took her foot off the brake, thus setting the van in motion and pinning her to the wall. The van then rear-ended another vehicle.

The driver was initially transported to St. Joseph's Hospital in Comox. She has since been airlifted to another hospital for treatment of serious head and chest injuries.
