B.C. Ferries cancelled two sailings of the Coastal Renaissance Friday due to mechanical issues with the ship’s main engine.

Both the 3:15 p.m. sailing from Tsawwassen and the 5:45 p.m. sailing from Duke Point near Nanaimo were cancelled.

Customers with bookings on the cancelled sailings will be contacted by Ferries to inform them the reservations will be cancelled. Refunds will be issued for fees and fares.

The problems came the same day the Coastal Celebration returned to service after a week following work to replace seals on propeller blades. A seal had caused an oil leak.

The Coastal Celebration usually does eight sailings a day between the Island and the mainland, carrying a maximum of 310 vehicles and 1,604 passengers and crew.
