The Westshore RCMP Major Crime Unit and Colwood firefighters are investigating a fire that damaged a Colwood home early Saturday morning.

No one was seriously injured, but two cats died in the fire.

Firefighters responded to a fire just before 3 a.m. in the 2300 block of Sooke Road.

Two young women and a caregiver had already vacated the house when emergency responders arrived, according to assistant fire chief John Cassidy.

The fire broke out on one side of the bungalow and spread into the house and roof.

Firefighters pursued “hot spots” and hidden fires in the roof area, eventually pulling apart parts of the ceiling for access.

“Quick work by the firefighters and an aggressive fire attack knocked down and extinguished the fire quite early,” Cassidy said.

There was extensive heat damage to the main floor, roof and attic, as well as minor smoke and water damage to the basement suite. While no insurance assessment had been made, Cassidy estimated damages to be upward of $100,000.

“Right now we’re just trying to put the pieces together and there’s no easy, obvious answer,” Cassidy said.

RCMP Cpl. Raj Sandhu said the fire does not appear suspicious at this time; however, the investigation is ongoing.
