Two people were arrested Monday after a break-in at a James Bay apartment building on Simcoe Street where a gun was seen.

Victoria police were called about 8:15 a.m. by someone reporting that two people had broken in and were in a work area of the building, with what looked like a handgun. The pair appeared to be impaired by drugs or alcohol, the caller said.

Officers contained the area and called in the Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team as a precaution.

Two people were taken into custody without incident about 11 a.m., and it was determined the gun was a realistic-looking airsoft gun.

No one was injured.

It’s the latest in a string of incidents on the Island where airsoft guns were mistaken for the real thing.

The investigation is continuing and police would like to talk to anyone with information about the incident. Call Victoria police at 250-997-7654, extension 1.
