Traffic disrupted after truck overturns on Marigold Road in Saanich

No one was hurt in the incident, and no other vehicles were involved.

A fully loaded concrete mixer truck tipped over on Marigold Road in Saanich shortly before 10 a.m. Tuesday while turning from Interurban Road onto Marigold.

No one was hurt in the incident, and no other vehicles were involved.

Saanich police closed part of Marigold but Burnside and Interurban roads were kept open. Traffic was slow, however, and police were asking drivers to consider alternative routes.

The site was clear by late afternoon.

Trio Ready Mix general manager Stephen Hay said they are still investigating what happened, but he ruled out excessive speed as the GPS, which is installed on all 13 of the company’s trucks, showed the driver was doing less than 10 km/h as he made the turn.

The 18-tonne truck was just a few houses away from where it had been expected to empty its concrete load when it rolled.

Righting the truck, once the concrete had been pumped from the drum, required three heavy-duty tow trucks from Totem Towing.

Hay said a contributing factor may have been the road where Marigold and Interurban meet.

“It’s a poor road and intersection for concrete trucks and commercial vehicles,” he said. “That’s why we take this corner slow.”

Hay said the truck can be repaired and given the amount of construction on the docket in the region, it will be in demand again soon.

Police are also investigating the incident.
