The District of Tofino issued a press release Friday afternoon announcing Bill Bennett, Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development had given two orders allowing candidate George Smith to withdraw from the election and for Osborne to be acclaimed as mayor.
The orders were needed from the minister because the official deadline for both withdrawal and acclamation had passed.
According to the Local Government Act, the district would have had to carry on with the election, despite having only one candidate, had Bennett not granted the orders.
