The Port McNeill RCMP warned boaters that operating a boat while impaired carries the same penalties under the Criminal Code as operating a motor vehicle while impaired.

Port McNeill RCMP are investigating the possibility alcohol impairment was a factor after a boat crashed into a marina breakwater in Sointula on Malcolm Island.

A boat with one person aboard was travelling at high speed when it hit the rocky structure July 14, police said.

The boat sank and the person was rescued from the rocks by the Canadian Coast Guard before being medically cleared and turned over to police.

Police said they found evidence of impairment and will be contacting the B.C. Prosecution Service for consideration of charges. The B.C. RCMP Underwater Recovery Team will help with the salvage of the vessel as part of the investigation.

Cpl. Spencer Mylymok warned boaters that operating a boat while impaired carries the same penalties under the Criminal Code as operating a motor vehicle while impaired.

Anyone with information or video related to the crash is asked to call Port McNeill RCMP at 250-956-4441.
