A suspect in the theft of about $20,000 worth of jewelry from a Langford store has turned himself in to West Shore RCMP.

Police said they took the 23-year-old man into custody on Monday for theft over $5,000 in connection with the Dec. 9 incident. He has since been released with conditions and is due to appear in court in the new year, police said.

The RCMP had released a surveillance photo and description of a suspect on Dec. 12.

Cory Kowalchuk, owner of West Shore Gold and Silver at Langford Centre, told the Times Colonist last week that the theft happened in a matter of seconds.

A man who had been browsing in store in the early afternoon returned three hours later. While an employee was helping another customer, he stole five gold chains.

The employee chased the man, but he disappeared across Goldstream Avenue.

Some of the stolen items have been recovered, said police, adding the investigation is continuing.
