Sun draws crowds to Oak Bay Tea Party

The final day of the Oak Bay Tea Party will serve up entertainment on the water, in the sky and on land, says festival chairman Bill Murphy-Dyson.

The final day of the Oak Bay Tea Party will serve up entertainment on the water, in the sky and on land, says festival chairman Bill Murphy-Dyson.

If the crowds who packed Willows Beach on Saturday thought there was a lot to do and see, there will be even more entertainment today with a floating teacup race, bathtub race and an air show, Murphy-Dyson said.

“There’s something about the Oak Bay Tea Party that encourages all ages to come,” Murphy-Dyson said.

“On Saturday, as the weather got better and better, the crowds got bigger and bigger.”

The festival offers live entertainment, competitions, demonstrations and carnival rides.

Oak Bay and Saanich police said Saturday’s parade and Tea Party were well organized and subdued, with no reports of altercations as of 9 p.m.

Later Saturday night, a Saanich teenager was arrested after assaulting two other teens who were leaving the party.

The Oak Bay Tea Party Society is a non-profit organization and the festival usually breaks even, Murphy-Dyson said. Many of the events raise money for charity.

Today’s activities start with a pancake breakfast at 7 a.m. The rides open at 11 a.m. and the entertainment starts at noon.
