The Summit Restaurant on the Malahat has been nominated as one of the country’s 30 best new restaurants by Air Canada’s enRoute magazine.

The restaurant, part of the Villa Eyrie Resort at 600 Ebadora Lane, south of Mill Bay, is one of only four nominees not located in a major city.

“We are thrilled to have Summit Restaurant be recognized for this prestigious accolade,” said Peter Trzewik, chief executive of GAIN Dealer Group, which opened the resort last year.

The 80-seat restaurant features dishes with an Italian influence, made with local ingredients, Trzewik said. Current offerings include Chinook salmon, Vancouver Island lamb and octopus giardino.

“Our chefs team have cultivated many loyal relationships with neighbouring farmers, as well as growing their own,” Trzewik said. “Our front-of-house has curated a beautiful wine list from Island and B.C. vineyards.”

The nominees are based on recommendations from more than two dozen judges: restaurant reviewers from major newspapers, cookbook authors and food magazine publishers, owners of restaurants that have national reputations, and hosts of television and radio food shows.

Among them is Gary Hynes founder and editor of Victoria-based Eat Magazine and the editor of Island Wineries of British Columbia; B.C.-based Eric Pateman, founder of Edible Canada; and Andrew Morrison, editor and publisher of Vancouver’s Scout Magazine and co-author of Roots to Shoots: Farm Fresh Recipes.

The top 10 new restaurants will be announced Oct. 19 in Toronto.
