A 22-year-old man remained in hospital Monday after a stabbing near Nanaimo’s Port Place mall.

The injured man showed up at the back door of the nearby Casino Nanaimo looking for help about 8:30 p.m. Sunday.

Two employees gave him first aid and called Nanaimo RCMP.

The man was taken to hospital with injuries described as serious but non-life threatening.

RCMP said surveillance footage taken in the area shows the man walking through a parking lot with a group of people, but the quality is too poor to provide much detail.

“At this time, the investigation is in the very early stages,” said Reserve Const. Gary O’Brien. “Over the next several days, police will be canvassing the downtown core for CCTV footage and looking for any potential witnesses.”

Police ask anyone with information about the incident to call Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345.
