A stabbing suspect was arrested early Wednesday after an hours-long overnight standoff at a James Bay residential building.

Victoria police and the Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team responded about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday to a building in the 200-block of Michigan Street.

A victim was found outside the unit and taken to hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

The suspect stayed inside, leading police to secure the area and advise neighbours to shelter in place.

Crisis negotiators joined in but after several hours, failed to convince the suspect to leave the building.

A warrant to enter the unit was granted about 6 a.m. Wednesday and police entered and arrested the suspect without incident.

The suspect remains in custody and the investigation is ongoing.
