Some Lantzville homeowners due a refund after error in grant program

Two dozen homeowners in Lantzville will receive a total of about $11,000 in refunds from the district after an error was discovered in the homeowner grant program.

Two dozen homeowners in Lantzville will receive a total of about $11,000 in refunds from the district after an error was discovered in the homeowner grant program.

The district, north of Nanaimo, said Wednesday that a financial review revealed the homeowner grant was incorrectly applied to several properties between 2003 and 2016. The owners, with both farm and residential properties, did not receive the full grants.

In May, the district council approved a refund program for the 24 properties affected and sought provincial approval.

The homeowners affected during that period are eligible for a refund plus penalties and interest. Refunds range from $5.17 to $1,552.30 per address.

The district has notified current residents of the homes, but is also trying to track down previous owners who might be eligible for the refund. The affected addresses are on the Lantzville District website, lantzville.ca.

The council also approved a refund program for incorrect taxes on some manufactured homes that is before the province for approval.
