University of Victoria students affected by a building closure will be returning to in-person classes on Monday after heat and ventilation issues at a campus building were resolved faster than anticipated.

Students who were supposed to have their classes in the David Strong Building began their semesters online this week after the building was closed after losing heat and ventilation capabilities over the winter break.

A UVic spokesperson initially said in a statement that it was a localized issue caused by a failing fan shaft in the air handling unit servicing the building, which was built in 1996, and that repairs were expected to take seven to 10 days.

The university said in an updated notice this week that the heat and ventilation issues were resolved faster than anticipated. Some classes resumed on Thursday.

The university said non-academic and community events that were scheduled to take place in David Strong Building next week but were moved to alternative locations will continue in their new locations unless participants are told otherwise by the university registrar.

UVic did not reveal how many students or classes were affected by the building closure.
