NANAIMO — Six convicts at the Nanaimo Correctional Centre were taken to hospital Thursday after consuming a noxious substance, possibly believing it to be an intoxicant.

“It is unknown at this time what substance the inmates ingested and that is something we are investigating,” B.C. Corrections director Marnie Mayhew said in a statement.

The convicts were taken to hospital for observation and possible treatment.

“Any injury is a great concern, and we are taking this incident very seriously,” Mayhew said. “B.C. Corrections will review the circumstances of this incident so that appropriate actions can be taken.”

“Despite available supports and strict protocols, people with addictions will take extraordinary measures in an attempt to become intoxicated,” he said.
