There’s been a surge of vehicle break-ins in Sidney in the past few days.

Nine thefts from motor vehicles have been reported to police over five days. Four took place in an underground parkade and five involved “punching” the locks.

“This is a dramatic shift in methodology,” said Sidney-North Saanich RCMP Const. Meighan de Pass.

The thefts have all occurred in the Fourth Street area, near the police station, and in the downtown residential core of Sidney, de Pass said.

In one case, thieves also broke into a condominium resident’s storage locker. Items stolen include personal identification documents, security passes for workplaces, electronics, binoculars and wallets.

Some of the items have been located nearby by police.

Sidney-North Saanich RCMP are reminding motorists and condominium residents to check their rearview mirror in secured underground parking lots to ensure no one else enters through the security gates.
