Dalyn Campbell expected to see generosity at Saturday’s garage sale fundraiser, but she was still surprised to get $200 US for a loaf of banana bread.

The sale raised money for Molly Campbell, the two-year-old Victoria girl fighting a rare form of cancer in Tennessee, and her family, who are at her side.

Campbell, along with Bobbi Frantzen — Molly’s grandmother on her maternal side — had wanted to host a garage sale. After a brief trip to Vancouver they came home to find one already planned by family friend Tara Wilcox.

The community support has been surprising, Wilcox said. With a goal of raising $5,000, she says they made half of that on Friday while setting all the tables up.

“It’s overwhelming, people buy a dollar book and give you a $20 bill and don’t want change,” Wilcox said.

Shoppers from across the capital region wandered around the tables, looking at books, toys and children’s clothing.

Suzann Cromwell, from Sooke, was on her way to see her nephew at Operation Trackshoes when she heard about the sale.

“You feel better about what you spend, because it’s going to a special little girl who really needs the help,” she said.

According to Campbell and Frantzen, Molly’s condition hasn’t changed since Friday. She’s heavily sedated with her eyes open, but she’s not talking or responding.
