A boat burglar stole a security camera during a break-in on the Gorge Waterway in Esquimalt early Sunday, but not before his images were transferred to a database monitored by the boat owner.

Larry Olsen had two cameras installed at his home, which backs onto the Gorge, because of recent thefts from his property. Both cameras send recorded footage to a device in the home.

Just after 1 a.m. Sunday, Olsen captured clear images of a young man rooting through the cabin of the 23-foot Bayliner.

While rummaging through the dash, the thief spots the camera and appears to disable it.

Olsen said Sunday afternoon that he believes the thief made off with both the camera and its power supply. He also took some alcohol from the fridge.

“Police won’t have any trouble finding this guy,” said Olsen, who had been set to go boating Sunday morning.

Victoria police have been notified and obtained video footage for their investigation.

Olsen said the thief might have arrived by boat. The second camera Olsen installed in the front of his house showed no signs of anyone approaching.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Victoria police at 250-995-7444 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
