Second case reported of man taking photo up a woman's skirt in Nanaimo

Both incidents occurred on July 29 — the first at Dollarama store, the second at a Walmart — but police say they involve different suspects

Nanaimo RCMP are investigating a second incident of a man taking a picture under a woman’s skirt in a store — on the same day and at about the same time as the first.

The victims in both incidents reported that it happened about 2 p.m. July 29, the first at a Dollarama store at 609 Bruce Ave., and the second at a Walmart store at 6801 North Island Highway.

The two stores are about 10 kilometres apart and the incidents do not involve the same suspect — the men are about 20 years apart in age, said Const. Gary O’Brien.

A suspect in the first case has already been identified and is co-operating with police, O’Brien said.

The two incidents occurring at the same time is “very odd,” he said.

The complainant at the Walmart store said she was shopping when she caught sight of a man with his phone out and angled up her skirt. She yelled at him and he quickly walked away.

By the time she found an employee to help her, the suspect appeared to have left the store.

Security cameras captured a poor image of the man, who is described as white, middle-aged and of medium height with a muscular build. He was wearing a grey shirt with white letters on the front, a black hat, shorts and sandals.

In the first incident, video surveillance showed the victim crouched over and looking away while the suspect’s phone is aimed under her skirt. The victim’s boyfriend chased the suspect before exchanging punches with him. The suspect managed to break free and get to his vehicle.
