The annual Salvation Army Christmas Kettle Campaign kicks off Saturday at the Uptown shopping centre.

Money generated in Greater Victoria will help people dealing with poverty, addictions and other challenges. The campaign runs across the country and is the Salvation Army’s largest national fundraising effort.

Among those scheduled to be on hand for the launch are Saanich Mayor Richard Atwell, players representing Rugby Canada and Salvation Army Indigenous Ministries consultant Shari Russell.

Salvation Army musicians and singers will be joined by performers from the Sooke school district and Pacific Christian School in providing seasonal music.

The event is set for 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Uptown’s Plaza Square.

The Salvation Army is also holding an event Friday to mark the official opening of Sooke Life Ministries, which will bring an array of services to the Sooke area — inclding preparation for employment, budgeting skills and computer training.

Establishment of the facility has been helped by the support of St. Vincent de Paul and M’akola Housing.
