A Saanich senior was injured Friday after a bottle-bomb tossed from a truck exploded in his face.

Saanich police said the 70-year-old man saw the occupants of a blue quad-cab Dodge or Ford pickup truck toss a bottle at a group of teenagers walking on Viaduct Avenue.

The bottle landed in the man’s front yard. When he bent down to look at the bottle, the man saw it was filled with a bluish fluid. The bottle exploded in his face, causing chemical burns to his face, ears and chest. He was taken to hospital for treatment.

Police officers examined the remains of the bottle and determined it was a crude homemade explosive, made with readily available items, likely using instructions available online.
