The investigation into the suspicious death of a 33-year-old Victoria man is no longer being handled by the Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit.

The unit, which includes officers from forces around the region, took over the case after Steven Middleton’s body was found about 8 a.m. July 26 in bushes off Beach Drive in Oak Bay by a couple of people out for a morning walk.

The case is now being overseen by the Saanich Police Major Crime Unit.

Saanich and Oak Bay police have an agreement where Saanich detectives help with Oak Bay cases involving major crimes.

“We have resources in place to investigate this file,” said Saanich police Const. Markus Anastasiades.

Anastasiades said police continue to seek out any witnesses or dashcam video that might help in the investigation.

They are particularly interested in video from 10 p.m. on July 25 to 7 a.m. on July 26 that shows Beach Drive from Cadboro Bay Village to Gonzales Bay, along with surrounding streets.

Footage can be submitted at tinyurl.com/saanich-evidence and investigators can be contacted at [email protected].

An online fundraising page has been set up to help Middleton’s family at gofundme.com/f/steven-middleton-family-relief-fund.
