Vancouver based landscape architecture firm VDZ+A Consulting has been granted the $1.45-million contract to tackle the renewal of Rutledge Park in the 900-block of Cloverdale Avenue.

The firm, headed by Mark Van Der Zalm, beat out four other companies for the contract.

The renewal project, funded by all three levels of government, includes playground improvements and installing a splash pad and washroom.

Existing playground gear will be replaced with new equipment and will incorporate nature play and natural elements. The seasonal splash pad will have inclusive elements for children and youth of all abilities.

The new washroom will be open year-round.

Rutledge Park will also feature new paved pathways, park furniture and a drinking fountain.

The idea behind the renewal and a splash pad goes back to 1998 when it was delayed due to budget shortfalls. The Quadra Cedar Hill Community Association requested Saanich reconsider the splash pad in 2015.

Construction is to start this year.
