An Oak Bay woman is out $20,000 after falling victim to an online “romance” scam.

Oak Bay police said they received a complaint Aug. 8 and determined the woman was manipulated into sending the money over the course of eight months by a man she met online.

They said she was in the process of sending him more when her financial planner intervened, questioning why she would send a large amount of money to a person she had never met.

Police continue to investigate.
