The 2300-block of Lansdowne Road in Oak Bay was closed for an hour today after a domestic gas line was struck. It has since reopened.

The Oak Bay Fire Department was dispatched, sending six firefighters, and closed down the road at about 2:11 p.m. while Fortis B.C. inspected the leak.

Three homes were evacuated by the fire department.

A crew from Fortis arrived on scene at about 2:15 p.m. and discovered a small natural gas pipe had been struck.

Michael Allison, a spokesman for Fortis, said the gas was blowing clear — which is the safest type of leak — and crews repaired the pipe.

Assistant Oak Bay Chief Don Roskelley said he was unsure what caused the leak but said the road was closed to limit the possibility of a blaze erupting.

The road was later reopened around 3:15 p.m.
