Ride B.C. Transit buses for free on New Year's Eve in some Island communities

Free transit service is being offered in Greater Victoria, Nanaimo and Port Alberni on New Year’s Eve.

Riding public transit will be free on New Year’s Eve in Greater ­Victoria, Nanaimo and Port Alberni, with some routes operating later than usual.

Free rides in Greater Victoria will begin at 6 p.m. on both fixed-route transit and handyDART.

In Nanaimo, transit will be free from 6 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. and in Port Alberni, bus rides will be free from 7:30 p.m. to 1:25 a.m.

Free rides are not being offered in the Cowichan Valley, Port McNeill or Port Hardy, and service will operate on a Sunday schedule on New Year’s Eve in those communities.

There will be no bus service on New Year’s Day in Port McNeill and Port Hardy.

In other Island communities, buses will run on a Sunday schedule on New Year’s Day.

Transit drivers in Campbell River and the Comox Valley remain on strike, and bus service has been suspended since Dec. 15.
