A reward fund for information leading to the arrest of the person who fatally injured a miniature horse earlier this month now stands at more than $4,000.
The fund, started by a concerned citizen and animal lover who donated $2,000, is being administered by the Scotiabank branch at the corner of Douglas Street and Hillside Avenue and is under the account name Reward for China Doll.
Donations can be made at the bank. Receipts will be issued.
The account will be open for one year and gather interest. If, in that time, information leading to an apprehension by police is provided, the informant will receive the money.
If no one is caught, donors will be able to get their money back in 12 months. Anything unclaimed will be donated to B.C. SPCA.
Four-year-old China Doll, known as Dolly, lived at a Holland Avenue farm and was owned by Kerry Hollebone.
At about 11 p.m. on Jan. 11, someone broke through the picket fence and went into Dolly’s stall.
When Hollebone came out the following morning to feed Dolly, blood was pouring from under her tail. Her rectum had been torn by the insertion of an unknown instrument.
Later that morning, Dolly, who was just 75 centimetres tall at the shoulder, had to be euthanized because the tear had allowed feces to enter her abdomen.
A post-mortem examination found signs of trauma, swelling and bruising around the the horse’s vulva, vagina and anus.
Saanich police spokesman Sgt. Steve Eassie said some information has come in and the investigation is continuing.
“We are hoping, at the end of the day, for information that leads to a good result,” he said.
