Work is beginning this week on repairing a portion of the main road on South Pender Island that was damaged during heavy rain and flooding in November 2021.

Closures of Canal Road of up to four hours could take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., said the Transportation Ministry.

Single-lane-alternating traffic is in place for the duration of the job.

Dynamite Construction has been awarded the contract to carry out permanent repairs on the road, about 2.5 kilometres east of the Pender Canal Bridge, which connects North and South Pender Island.

The work, expected to be completed by late this year, will include rock blasting, realigning the road onto solid bedrock, expanding the existing culvert and putting in a reinforced retaining wall.

The goal is to make the road better able to withstand future extreme rainfalls.

A temporary barge-landing facility will be build at Boundary Passage Drive to transport equipment and materials.

Traffic on Canal Road has been reduced to one lane in the damaged section since November 2021, with a traffic light allowing only one car through at a time.
