Remembrance Day events from Victoria to Nanaimo

Ceremonies include one in Victoria at the B.C. legislature, in Saanich at Saanich Municipal Hall, and in Langford at Veterans Memorial Park.

Ceremonies

Victoria — Legislative Cenotaph, B.C. Parliament Buildings, 501 Belleville St., 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Host: Legion Branch, Trafalgar/Pro Patria, 411 Gorge Rd. E.

Afghanistan Memorial Service — Afghan Memorial, located at the corner of Quadra and Courtney Streets, beginning at 9:45 a.m. More at vicafghanistanmemorial.ca.

Esquimalt — Memorial Park, 1200 Esquimalt Rd. The parade will begin at 10 a.m. at Admirals Road and Esquimalt Road and end at the Cenotaph in Memorial Park. Royal Canadian Navy, Cadets, Royal Canadian Legion and Scouts Canada in attendance.

Saanich — Cenotaph at Saanich Municipal Hall, 770 Vernon Ave., 10:45 a.m.- 11:45 a.m.

Central Saanich — HEL,HILEČ» Park in Brentwood Bay, 1209 Clarke Rd., 10:50 a.m. March (flypast at 10:45 a.m.).

Oak Bay — Oak Bay Cenotaph, 2800 Beach Dr., 10:55 a.m. In person or streamed online at lumeraevents.com/oakbayremembers

Colwood — Colwood Cenotaph, at the Colwood Cenotaph in the Garry Oak grove outside the Juan de Fuca arena. The 7th Juan de Fuca Scouts will march from John Stubbs School to the cenotaph for a small ceremony at about 10:45 a.m. with a moment of silence at 11 a.m.

Royal Roads University — Castle Terrace lawn, 2005 Sooke Rd., 10:40 a.m.-12:40 p.m. Hosted by the Vancouver Island Ex-Cadet Club.

Langford — Veterans Memorial Park, Veterans Memorial Parkway at Goldstream Avenue, 10:30 a.m.

Sidney — Parade from Mary Winspear Centre at 10:25 a.m. along Beacon Avenue and Second Street to Cenotaph at Sidney Town Hall, 2440 Sidney Ave. Service of Remembrance at 10:45 a.m. A fly-past is planned for 11 a.m.

Sooke — Parade from Evergreen Mall to Sooke Cenotaph, 10:30 a.m. Ceremony commences 10:50 a.m. at the Cenotaph. Refreshments to follow at Sooke Legion, 6726 Eustace Rd.

Cobble Hill — Saturday, Nov. 11, 10 a.m. at the Cenotaph Cobble Hill, 1468 Heigh St. Host Legion Branch Malahat District.

Duncan — Duncan Cenotaph, Charles Hoey Park, 130 Canada Ave., 10:50 a.m.

Nanaimo — Dallas Square Park Cenotaph, 85 Front St., 10:30 a.m.

Other events

Fort Rodd Hill and Fisgard Lighthouse National Historic Sites is offering free admission on Remembrance Day, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. The WWI Medical Training interpretive program will be offered 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. in the Casemates area of the fort. Remembrance Day Victoria Children’s Choir Performance, 12:30-12:50 p.m. at the Royal B.C. Museum, 675 Belleville St. Free admission.

Remembrance Day Human Library. This Human Library program is an opportunity to talk to two naval service members with unique service histories and trades. Remembrance Day: Music of the WW2 Swing Era. Hits of the late 1930s and early 40s that sustained a generation through the dark days of WW2. We’ll cover songs like Vera Lynn’s Bluebirds Over the White Cliffs of Dover and We’ll Meet Again. 7 p.m. at Hermann’s Jazz Club, 753 View St.

The Freedom from War Coalition will join members of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) to observe Remembrance Day at 1 p.m. at the main gate of Canadian Forces Maritime Experimental and Test Range at Nanoose Bay on Powder Point Road.
