The former manager of the Red Lion Inn appeared briefly before a crowded Victoria courtroom Wednesday to face five charges of aggravated assault.

Zhi Wei Meng, known as Wally, is charged with stabbing five employees at the Red Lion Inn and Suites on the afternoon of Nov. 17. The stabbings took place in the dining area and kitchen of the hotel's Jade Fountain Restaurant.

Meng, 54, who is part-owner of the hotel, appeared anxious as he looked out at family members and Red Lion Inn employees and co-workers who were in court to support him.

Meng's defence lawyer, Steven Kelliher, asked for the case to be adjourned until Dec. 19.

After the court appearance, Kelliher said Meng would apply for bail when he was well enough.

Meng is in custody at the Vancouver Island Regional Correctional Centre, where he is receiving medical care and being monitored, Kelliher said.
