With current Oak Bay Police Deputy Chief Julie Chanin preparing to step into her new role as chief, the Oak Bay Police Board has launched its search to fill the deputy-chief position.

Chanin’s appointment as chief of the 24-officer department was announced March 18, making her the first female to hold that position in Greater Victoria.

She is also the first woman to serve as a deputy police chief in the region.

Chanin will succeed Mark Fisher on June 1 after his retirement takes effect.

The deputy-chief hiring notice from Oak Bay police said the board is seeking “a highly motivated law enforcement professional” for the job, with applicants required to apply by midnight April 18.

“This progressive organization is committed to public safety and community policing and engagement with a strong sense of pride in the connection between the municipality and its 18,000 residents,” the notice said. “The deputy chief constable will be highly credible and will promote and maintain a visible and respected profile for the Oak Bay Police Department.”

The notice described Oak Bay as a place with the amenities of a large, urban centre that has “succeeded in maintaining a sense of community and charm.”
