Once again, the less fortunate in Greater Victoria have received Christmas help from the Times Colonist and its readers. To all of you who helped, a special thanks from all of us.
And some special words, as well, from some of the people who had a better Christmas as a result of the Times Colonist Christmas Fund.
“Thank you all for the help that you assist me in,” a card from one recipient said. “It has been greatly appreciated.”
“Please keep up the good work,” another note said.
“Your gift to each of us will ease our troubles in different ways, but give us all a better Christmas,” said one woman, who ended her letter with a phrase reminiscent of Tiny Tim: “God bless.”
“Your generosity helped my Christmas with the food associated with this time of year,” another letter said.
The Christmas Fund has been a vital part of Greater Victoria since 1956, when the old Daily Colonist set out to help 500 families in need. Through the years, the project has evolved and grown, but its goal has always been the same: To give help to those who need it.
This season, the Christmas Fund raised $267,578.46. That money enabled us to help 2,400 applicants, and 4,600 people in total.
Recipients included single people, couples and families — including one couple with seven children.
Everyone received grocery vouchers. Families received an additional voucher for shopping at Mayfair mall.
As we start a new year with hopes of good health and prosperity, we thank our readers again for your generosity.
