Port Alberni RCMP are investigating a crash that closed Highway 4 in both directions Tuesday afternoon and sent a 44-year-old woman to hospital.

According to B.C. Emergency Health Services, emergency response vehicles were dispatched after reports came in at 12:42 p.m. of a crash near Johnston Road and Broughton Street.

Three ground units and an air ambulance responded.

RCMP said the incident involved an older model Ford F-250 truck and a later model Subaru Impreza Wagon.

A 44-year-old Port Alberni woman, a passenger in the Subaru, was airlifted to hospital in serious condition. Two other occupants of the Subaru were transported to hospital for assessment of what were believed to be minor injuries.

Police say the driver of the Ford, a 26-year-old man from Port Alberni, remained at the scene and was co-operating with investigators.

The cause of the crash has yet to be determined, though alcohol is not believed to be a factor, according to the RCMP.

A traffic reconstructionist was called in to assist in the investigation.

The RCMP are asking anyone who witnessed the incident and has not already spoken with police to call Port Alberni RCMP at 250-723-2424 and cite file 2021-13417.
