Environment and Climate Change Canada issued a rainfall warning Sunday morning for west Vancouver Island, saying heavy rain is expected to fall on southern sections of west Vancouver Island, including Port Renfrew.

So far, weather stations on the west coast have reported 50 to 80 millimetres of rain from an atmospheric river which settled over the B.C. south coast this weekend.

Another 25 millimetres of rain is expected to fall on the southern sections of west Vancouver Island today. Strong southerly winds of 50km/h gusting to 70 are also expected Sunday morning.

Heavy rain will gradually ease to moderate rain, and change to light showers this evening with the passage of the system.

Special weather statements are also in effect for the Malahat, from Goldstream to Mill Bay, Greater Victoria, inland Vancouver Island and east Vancouver Island from Duncan to Nanaimo. Periods of heavy rain and strong winds are expected today

Strong southeast winds of 40 gusting to 60 km/h are expected near southern sections of Strait of Georgia Sunday morning.

About 100 B.C. Hydro customers have lost power in Duncan and North Cowichan due to the windstorm.

Moderate to heavy rain will ease to a chance of showers this evening with the passage of the system.

Environment Canada is warning that heavy downpours can cause water pooling on roads and localized flooding in low-lying areas.
