Saanich police are charging the driver of a car with failing to stop for a red light, causing a crash that shut down McKenzie Avenue at Cedar Hill Road for five hours on Thursday.

Police said the crash happened about 7 a.m. when a 25-year-old driver in a pickup carrying a propane tank was involved in a T-bone collision with a car driven by a 56-year-old man.

Saanich police said the car was travelling west on McKenzie and appeared to have driven through a red light, hitting the southbound pickup.

Fire crews were called to clean up the site due to a propane leak, and the truck’s tank had to be bled out. The vehicle is used for propane storage and delivery, police said.

The 56-year-old driver was taken to Victoria General Hospital by ambulance for seat-belt-related injuries and was released later in the day.

The road reopened about 1:30 p.m.
