A vehicle crash knocked out power to nearly 2,000 B.C. Hydro customers near Nanaimo Regional General Hospital on Wednesday afternoon.

B.C. Hydro said 1,977 customers lost power just after 1 p.m. in an area north of Venlaw Road, south of Mallard Drive, west of Princess Royal Avenue and east of Maxey Road.

Island Health said the hospital is not affected by the outage.

In the case of a power outage, the hospital would switch to backup generators to continue normal operations, an Island Health spokesperson said.

A crew is on site and power was expected to be restored around 5 p.m.
