A search of a home by the Port Alberni RCMP’s Crime Reduction Unit on March 10 turned up controlled substances and illicit drugs, along with machetes and airsoft guns.

Police said they executed a search warrant at a residence on North Crescent as part of their “continued effort to disrupt the sale of illicit drugs” and to reduce the number of overdoses in the community.

Officers found 10 people in the residence, one of whom had an outstanding warrant for assault causing bodily harm and two counts of failing to appear in court.

It was the second search of a suspected “drug house” this year, police said, with fentanyl one of their major concerns.

“The importation, production and trafficking of fentanyl has been associated to the involvement of organized crime groups,” said Const. Richard Johns. “We are focused on targeting these groups, which seize upon and exploit all opportunities to profit from the sale of illicit drugs.”

He said police have already seized almost 1,000 doses of illicit drugs so far this year, as well as hundreds of controlled substances and about $6,500 in cash.
