Police seize $160,000, drugs, guns; Saanich man released on bail

A Saanich man has been released on $50,000 bail after being charged with drug trafficking. Amarvit Singh Gill, 25, who was arrested Friday afternoon, appeared in Victoria provincial court on Tuesday.

A Saanich man has been released on $50,000 bail after being charged with drug trafficking.

Amarvit Singh Gill, 25, who was arrested Friday afternoon, appeared in Victoria provincial court on Tuesday. He is charged with two counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking, unsafe storage of a firearm, unauthorized possession of a firearm and possessing a prohibited weapon without a licence.

Saanich police are holding a press conference today about Gill’s arrest.

In a statement issued on Monday, Sgt. Steve Eassie said Gill became a person of interest during an investigation by the Regional Crime Unit and Saanich detectives.

Police obtained search warrants for residences believed to be associated with Gill.

They seized 0.68 kilograms of cocaine, more than $160,000 cash and two assault rifles with oversized magazines.

Gill was released on the $50,000 bail with a $10,000 cash deposit and conditions to live at his parents’ house and observe a 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. curfew. Gill must not be outside his residence except to attend school, work and the Sikh temple on Topaz Avenue.

He is prohibited from possessing a cellphone and must not possess any weapons.

Gill’s next court appearance has been scheduled for Sept. 11.
