Police dog tracks down robbery suspect in Port Alberni

Port Alberni RCMP dog Jammer quickly tracked down a man suspected of robbing a Port Alberni gas station in the 3900 block of Johnston Road.

Staff at the gas station told police a man entered the store just before 10 p.m. last Wednesday, said he had a gun in his pocket and demanded cash. The man grabbed the money and fled on foot.

Officers were on scene within minutes and with Jammer quickly found and arrested the suspect nearby. The RCMP do not believe the suspect ever had a weapon.

Nathan Mearns, 31, was charged with robbery and failing to comply with an undertaking and was being held in custody for a court appearance this week.

Port Alberni RCMP’s victim services department is working with staff who were traumatized by the robbery.

Crimes such as these take a toll on our community through many ways, especially on the staff, said Const. Richard Johns. The employee took the safest route and complied with the demands of the suspect which in the end provided the best outcome possible.
