Independent Investigations Office of B.C. is a civilian body that investigates police incidents involving death or injury.

The province’s police watchdog will investigate after a man was badly injured by a police dog during his arrest on Jan. 31 in Courtenay.

The Independent Investigations Office said a man was arrested around 2 p.m. by Comox Valley RCMP in a wooded area in the 2300-block of Jacqueline Drive.

“At some point the dog was deployed on the person while [officers] were taking him into custody,” said IIO spokesman Owen Court.

The man suffered serious injuries but Court said he could not go into specifics about what type of injuries the man suffered. Court also would not say why the man was being arrested and why the police dog was used.

Investigators want to speak with a woman who was walking in the area and may have witnessed the arrest.

Anyone with information is asked to call the IIO Witness Line at 1 855 446-8477.

Police agencies are required to report any serious injuries or deaths to the Independent Investigations Office.
