Victoria police have tracked down a man alleged to have stolen a “bait bike” within six minutes of it being deployed.
The GPS-equipped bike was left on Store Street, near Herald Street, early Thursday. A suspect was arrested soon after on Johnson Street.
Theft under $5,000 and possession of a controlled substance are among the charges being recommended by police.
The bait-bike program is modelled after the police department’s successful bait-car program, which uses GPS and video cameras to snare would-be thieves.
Bait cars have been around since 2003, while bait bikes were introduced in 2016.
