Esquimalt is holding a public hearing on Monday for a proposed six-storey apartment building on the site of an old bingo hall on Esquimalt Road.

Council unanimously approved the hearing for the 135-unit project last month after the developer modified the plans to include two ground-floor live-work units.

The developer, Vancouver-based Denciti Development Corp., said the units could be used by small businesses such as therapists, tutoring services, notaries, or artists.

The proposed building, dubbed Esquimalt Terrace, would consolidate land parcels at 820 Esquimalt Rd., and 833 and 837 Old Esquimalt Rd.

Submitted architectural drawings show the building would have six three-bedroom units, 71 two-bedroom units, and 58 one-bedroom or studio units.

A two-storey underground parkade accessible from Old Esquimalt Road will have 206 bicycle parking spaces and 136 vehicle parking spaces.

Esquimalt Bingo Hall was shut down by the gaming conglomerate Great Canadian Gaming in March of 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The building was purchased by Denciti Development in 2021, and is currently being used as a commissary kitchen by a number of food businesses.
