Police are searching for a child-sized canoe stolen from Cowichan Tribes’ Le’lun’uy’lh Daycare in Duncan on the night of Dec. 26.

North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP said a male entered the fenced playground area and stole the canoe.

An unknown person recently shared a photo of a male walking through the snow with the canoe on his back and police are hoping to find out who that person is.

The theft was reported to police after the photo came to light.

“Crimes such as these can only be solved with the help of our community and it is fantastic that someone shared this image,” said Const. Erin Stevenson.

Police would also like to hear from anyone else with information about the incident.

“It is a terrible shame that the children will miss their wooden canoe,” said Const. Bert Calvo of the Indigenous Policing Services Unit. “I really hope the community will be able to come together to get it returned to them.”

Call North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP at 250-748-5522 with any information or report anonymously to Cowichan Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
