A suspected drunk driver tore a path of destruction through Victoria Wednesday night, crashing into a fence and ramming into a pole — twice — before police finally arrested him.

The 32-year-old Langford man first took out a fence in the 900-block of Hillside Avenue, then drove south on Douglas Street in his blue Silverado pickup. Police later discovered he also slammed into a utility pole near Finlayson Avenue around 11 p.m., said Victoria police spokesman Bowen Osoko.

A witness watched the truck back up and hit the pole a second time, before backing up and continuing on Douglas.

The witness flagged down a canine officer driving by and told him about the crash. The officer called for backup and followed the vehicle down Douglas, watching him drive through two red lights.

As the man turned west on Pandora Avenue, he was boxed in by several police cruisers near Broad Street.

“As officers surrounded the truck, the driver began to rev his engine,” Osoko said. However, he finally decided to give himself up to police.

He was arrested and held in police cells overnight for a court appearance.

The Langford man, who is known to police, is facing charges of impaired driving, dangerous driving and breach of probation. His name was not released.
